Kate is part of "Red Rock Rondo"

Red Rock Rondo has been chosen as a signature presentation for the Zion National Park Centennial Project, the Park's 100th anniversary celebration during 2009. See Red Rock Rondo's Myspace page for more information and performance dates. The project and some group performances will be filmed for a documentary produced by KUED television, based in Salt Lake City. "Red Rock Rondo" began in 2006 and features musicians Kate MacLeod, Phillip Bimstein, Hal Cannon, Charlotte Bell, Harold Carr and Flavia Cervino-Wood. This project is a collaborative effort, a composed song cycle based on interviews with residents living in the Rockville/Springdale/Grafton area of Southern Utah. Utah-based composer (and former Springdale mayor) Phillip Bimstein was awarded a grant to compose "Red Rock Rondo" by the nationwide Continental Harmony Commissioning Program of the American Composers Forum. Through composer residencies such as Bimstein's, Continental Harmony promotes celebration of community, history, and a sense of place. The six musicians perform the collection of original songs with vocals accompanied by an assortment of guitars, mandolin, banjo, fiddle, mandocello, harmonica, button accordion, oboe, and English Horn. "Red Rock Rondo" is a project supported by Continental Harmony and Utah-based partners: Mountain West Center for Regional Studies, the Utah Arts Festival, the Town of Springdale, the Town of Rockville, Zion Natural History Association, Zion Canyon Field Institute, Tanner Summer Series, KRCL FM Radio, and Utah Public Radio.

Mollie covers Kate

On June 14, 2007, Mollie O'Brien and Rich Moore release their new CD, "900 Baseline." It was recorded before an audience at the Chautauqua Community House in Boulder, Colorado. Mollie and Rich have included Kate's song, "Lark in the Morning," which has become standard repertoire in their performances. On "900 Baseline," Kate is in good company, for her song is among others by Steve Goodman, A.P. Carter, Percy Mayfield, Bob Haymes, Malvina Reynolds, Memphis Minnie, and Ted Jarrett. You won't want to miss Mollie's new collection of timeless songs--sung by one of the most talented singers of our time, and accompanied by her long-time partner Rich Moore. For more information and links to purchase this CD and Mollie's others (including her 1996 studio recording, "Tell It True," on which she first recorded Kate's "Lark in the Morning") see Mollie O'Brien's website (www.mollieobrien.com).

Roots Music Report 5/10/05
5 STARS.
This album is just awesome. Kate MacLeod presents her music as well as any has been presented. A little bit of everything on this CD. Kate's music is honest and she delivers her message true and clear. This is out of the ordinary folk music. Unique and produced with expertise. This release wil not be taken for granted by any Folk Music lover. An outstanding project by Kate MacLeod and the Pancakes.

Behind the Boss

Still wet with sweat from their invigorating, standing-room-only Saturday Night performance at the Tucson Folk Festival on April 30, 2005, Kate MacLeod and the Pancakes returned to their humble digs in northern Utah to be greeted by the unexpected news that their newly released recording, "Breakfast" (Waterbug Records) was ranked (and tied for) third--behind only recent releases from Bruce Springsteen and Robert Earl Keen, Jr.--in terms of the number of the 73 Americana Music Association-registered radio stations that added it as a new title for regular airplay during the week ending May 2. Breakfast is served!

Laurie covers Kate

Kate's song "Alaska" has been recorded by the divine bluegrass/old-time/songwriter, Laurie Lewis. The recording of Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum, "Guest House" was released March 30, 2004, on High Tone Records. For further information about Laurie Lewis, visit her website at www.laurielewis.com. "Alaska" can be found on Kate's bluegrass-flavored 1995 debut recording, "Trying to Get it Right," produced by Charles Sawtelle, available through Waterbug Records and also this website (see Kate's CDs page).

Other things to look for...

Kate played fiddle on Jack Hardy's releases, Omens (2000), Bandolier (2002), and NOIR (2007), available through his website. Kate can occasionally be found at a Jack Hardy performance as fiddler in his band. It's a magical musical combination. Also of interest are Anke Summerhill's two recordings, The Roots Run Deep, and her newest release, Shine On Through. Kate has worked as the producer for both of these recordings.
